This chapter is based on extensive studies on Middle Management in large public companies in France. The diagnosis often made by senior executives (‘we have a middle management problem’) is discussed and the views of the different actors on each other are analyzed. It questions the common views on Middle Managers being reluctant to change; it explains why and when these views are relevant or when other explanations than mere ‘archaism’ or ‘bad temper’ must be found.
